What is Kalalau?
Pronounced "call-allow."
If you've never heard of Kalalau, you're not alone. It's located on the island of Kauai and is completely isolated from the rest of the island by the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast.
The only ways to reach Kalalau are an arduous 11-mile hike or hours of ocean kayaking. Permits for either method must be acquired from the State of Hawaii up to a year in advance.
99.9% of the tourists who see Kalalau are on a boat or helicopter tour of the Na Pali Coast. They are forbidden by law to land. Only a very few lucky travelers ever actually get to set foot on Kalalau Beach and explore Kalalau Valley.
